Carry Your Story Forward
Create a personalized Ema inspired by one of Japan’s most enduring traditions.
Whether you are celebrating a milestone, expressing gratitude, remembering a loved one, setting an intention, or sharing a hope for the future, your Ema becomes a lasting reflection of a meaningful moment in your life.
What is an Ema?
Ema (絵馬) are among Japan’s most enduring spiritual traditions. The word combines the kanji 絵 (e), meaning “picture” or “painting,” and 馬 (ma), meaning “horse.” Long before wooden plaques existed, worshippers would offer actual horses to shrines as sacred gifts, believing they could carry prayers and messages to the kami, the divine spirits of Shinto. Because real horses were costly, painted images of horses gradually became an accepted substitute. These painted offerings evolved into the wooden plaques known today as Ema.
Over centuries, Ema became a way for ordinary people to leave wishes, hopes, gratitude, and personal reflections in a sacred place. Whether praying for health, success, love, safe travel, or simply giving thanks, visitors write their thoughts on a wooden plaque and entrust them to the shrine. Displayed together, thousands of Ema create a collective tapestry of human aspirations—a quiet record of dreams, milestones, and moments that matter.
Even today, the tradition remains remarkably unchanged. Across Japan, Ema continue to connect the modern world with centuries of faith, offering a simple yet meaningful way to leave a message in the care of something greater than oneself.
